Research

At the Institute of Geosciences 15 working groups aim at a sound understanding of the physical and biogeochemical states and development of the Earth system. Teaching and research topics comprise climate change, coastal development, sustainable use of georesources, application of geotechnologies and the preservation of ecosystem services. In addition, we examine the geopotential for upcoming regional and global transformations in energy and transport. Activities range from basic science to applied research and the development and implementation of solutions.

Focus Marine Geosciences
Focus Marine Geosciences

The coasts, ice shelves and oceans of the world are characterized by continuous change. Marine geosciences research aimes at a process-oriented understanding of the state and the dynamics of marine systems and habitats.
Focus Applied Geosciences
Focus Applied Geosciences

The supply of the society with energy and usable groundwater as well as the sustainable use of the subsoil for different purpoises are central tasks of the applied geosciences.

Themes

In addition to the specialised activities in the working groups, we jointly work on the following topics:

Theme Humans and environment
Theme Humans and environment

Activities of the Institute of Geosciences in the field of human and Environment encompass a wide range of investigations, e.g. in coastal research, archeology, constructions and paleo environment.
Theme climate change
Theme climate change

Climate change is in the focus of societal interest. We explore climatic conditions from the geological past through to today the future. We combine methods of paleoclimate construction, e.g. from marine sediment archives, with state-of-the-art numerical model simulations.
Theme Resources
Theme Resources

The exploration and characterization of deposits of element and Energy commodities. Research is going to be used as a resource in water Underground and to regenerative energies carried out.
Subject area earth system
Subject area earth system

The Earth system includes the processes of the Earth and the interactions with the ocean, ice and atmosphere. The structure and dynamics of the earth can only be described and understood by the combination of different observation methods.
