- Requirements:
The lecture addresses master and diploma (Hauptstudium) students of climate physics, meteorology, biological and physical oceanography, and geology as well as ISOS students.
Up to 20 students can participate. Half of the course can be taken by ISOS students.
A bachelors degree in a biological, geological, physical or chemical discipline.
Credits and conditions:
The successful completion of the course includes an oral presentation and contribution to writing a synthesis paper.

- Contents
- Educational Objectives:
This interdisciplinary seminar should give an introduction into the role of carbon (including the greenhouse gases CO2 and methane) in the climate-system, with a focus on the coupling of atmosphere, ocean and solid earth. The seminar will teach the basics of the earths climate history, with an emphasis on the cycling of carbon through sediments, ocean, atmosphere and biosphere. Climate change issues will be discussed interactively with the students along the current fourth IPCC assessment.
Content:
The seminar is divided into interactive lectures connected to a student part with presentations and exercises. The student part includes studying and presenting recent articles on modern aspects of carbon in the climate-system. Within teams the students should learn to analyze and discuss scientific papers and IPCC chapters in more detail. Finally, a synthesis paper will be developed by all participants together.

- Die Vorlesung erstreckt sich über ein Winter- und ein Sommersemester mit je 1 SWS. Start der Vorlesung ist zum Wintersemester. Die Prüfung (Klausur) findet in den Prüfungszeiträumen des Sommersemesters statt.
Das Seminar zur Vorlesung findet ebenfalls jeweils im Wintersemester und Sommersemester mit 1 SWS statt. Pflicht ist die Teilnahme an mindestens einem Semester.
Bitte beachten Sie für Bachelorarbeiten: Möchten Sie in der Arbeitsgruppe Paläoklimaforschung Ihre Bachelorarbeit ablegen ist die Teilnahme an dieser Veranstaltung Voraussetzung. Außerdem müssen Sie Ihren Vortrag im Wintersemester halten, damit Sie daran anschließend mit der Bachelorarbeit beginnen können. Der Vortrag für die Bachelorarbeit findet dann gegen Ende des Seminars im Sommersemester statt. Sollten Sie bis dahin nicht ihre Bachelorarbeit abgeschlossen haben, kann die Prüfungsleistung Vortrag an den ersten Terminen des Wintersemesters gehalten werden.
