We perform Research in the following areas

Shoreline erosion with sanddune in background

  • Coastal evolution
  • Sediment distribution in coastal and shelf areas
  • Deglacial and Holocene sea-level changes, shoreline migration and climatic impacts
  • Sediment dynamics in coastal and shelf areas
  • Sediment discharge from river-mouth systems and dispersion in coastal and shelf areas
  • Anthropogenic impact (offshore sand and gravel mining, influence of construction works on sediment dynamics and geomorphological changes)

Main working areas are the coastal zones of:

Brazil, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Madagascar, Malaysia, Poland, Vietnam

Future research activities of the group will be focussed on the Baltic Sea and the North Sea as well as on selected tropical coastal and shelf areas. Much of this work is within the framework of bilateral/international and interdisciplinary cooperation (UNESCO, IGCP, LOICZ).

  • Evaluation and environmental impact of sand and gravel extraction incl. heavy-mineral placer deposits on sediment budgets in coastal areas (North Sea, Baltic Sea, Vietnam)
  • Impact of Mangrove deforestation on coastal sediment dynamics (Malaysia)
  • Evolution of tropical coastal and shelf systems (Brazil, Madagascar, Malaysia, Vietnam)
  • Large Scale Coastal Behavior (LCB) - Short and long term sea level fluctuations and the response of the coastline (Baltic Sea, Brazil)
  • Sediment dynamics in coastal zones incl. sea bottom and subsurface survey and coastal oceanography
  • Climatic impacts
  • Research capacity building for sustainable development
